Chapter 17 - THE BABY NOBODY MENTIONED

Paige had never told me she was pregnant.
Gwen found more in Margaret's bedroom: prenatal bills, ultrasound photos, and a sealed adoption file.
The dates were from two years earlier.
Claire arranged for the detective to collect everything legally.
Paige sat in an interview room for nearly three hours before she finally broke.
The baby was Voss's.
He was married at the time.
Margaret had helped hide the pregnancy. The child had been placed through a private adoption, and Voss had paid Margaret sixty thousand dollars to keep his name out of the paperwork.
That money was the seed.
The first theft.
Once Margaret realized Voss could manipulate military records and Paige realized I was sending money home without monitoring every transaction, the scheme grew.
"They told themselves they'd pay it back," Claire said. "Then they started living like the money belonged to them."
Gwen sat beside me in the lawyer's conference room, holding my hand.
"Why did they hate me so much?" she asked.
I didn't have an answer.
Claire did.
"You were the obstacle. You noticed numbers. You asked questions. And once you got sick, they saw vulnerability."
Gwen looked down.
"I let them convince me I was weak."
"No," Claire said. "You survived them while undergoing chemotherapy. That's not weakness."
Later that evening, Paige asked to speak to me.
I almost refused.
Then I went.
She sat behind glass, no designer clothes, no champagne, no smug smile.
"Mom started it," she said.
"You threw things at my wife."
Her eyes dropped.
"I was angry."
"At what?"
"At you."
I stared at her.
"You got out," she whispered. "You built a life. Mom talked about you every day like you were the only one who mattered. Then your money started coming home and..."
"So you punished Gwen?"
She began to cry.
I felt nothing.
Then Paige leaned toward the glass.
"There's one thing you still don't know."
May you like
I almost walked away.
"Gwen tried to leave eight months ago," she said. "Mom stopped her."
