Chapter 5 - GWEN'S LETTER

I opened the envelope inside my truck.

My hands had been steady under fire.

They shook reading my wife's handwriting.

David,

If you're reading this, I either got brave or something happened to me.

Your mother controls the mail. Paige controls the bank logins. They told me you stopped sending money. Then they told me you asked them to manage everything because I was "unstable."

I didn't believe them at first.

Then they showed me messages from your email saying you were tired of my medical problems and wanted them to handle me until you came home.

I know now those messages were fake.

But when you're sick and scared and everyone around you keeps saying you're crazy, you start wondering if maybe they're right.

I was diagnosed with lymphoma eighteen months ago.

I started treatment.

Your mother canceled the second payment.

She said we couldn't afford it.

She said you had stopped helping.

Paige told me if I contacted your command, she would send them "proof" that I had been stealing your money and using drugs.

They made me sign papers when I was heavily medicated.

I don't know what I signed.

The room at the end of the hall has copies of everything I could save.

Please don't confront them until you see it.

And David, if I seem afraid of you when you come home, please understand this: they spent more than a year teaching me that every bad thing happening to me was somehow your decision.

I'm trying to remember who you really are.

I had to stop reading.

I pressed both palms against my eyes.

For four years, I had imagined danger living thousands of miles away from home.

I had never considered that home itself had become dangerous.

My phone buzzed.

Gwen.

WHERE ARE YOU?

I typed: GETTING COFFEE. YOU OKAY?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

May you like

Then one message came through.

COME BACK NOW. YOUR MOM FOUND THE MISSING KEY.
