Chapter 4 - A House Somebody Wanted

By morning, the deputy's advice had begun to feel less like caution and more like an instruction we'd been foolish to delay. We checked into the inn before sunrise. Winnie cried because she had left her shoebox city at home.

Micah volunteered to return for our clothes. I stopped him. "Nobody goes there alone."

"You're acting like we're already prisoners."

"I'm acting like a man who heard his daughter plan to make us prisoners."

He looked at me, hurt by the word daughter. We never said stepdaughter at home. I had taught Beth to ride a bicycle, driven to her college dorm, and danced with her at her wedding. Whatever she had done, I couldn't erase those years to make the present easier.

At nine, Ruth's longtime attorney, Anita Flores, met us at her office. She listened, watched the clip, and opened the county property records on her computer.

"Someone filed a notice of a proposed purchase option last week," she said. "It isn't a completed sale. But it could complicate a legitimate transaction."

"We haven't signed a thing," Ruth said.

Anita showed us a scanned page. Ruth's name was typed below a signature that looked almost right, except for the long tail on the final letter. The contact address belonged to a company called Orchard Gate Holdings.

"I know that name," Micah said. "Simon Kreel uses it."

Anita would challenge the filing and request the underlying documents. She warned us not to assume a forged signature had transferred ownership. A real estate transaction still required verification and legal steps. But the attempted pressure was real enough.

"Why would Beth do it?" Ruth asked.

Anita hesitated. "I can't answer motives. I can tell you the option lists an advance payment of ninety thousand dollars. The recipient's initials are B.C."

Ruth stared at the paper. Beth had never mentioned ninety thousand dollars. She had complained about bills, but she insisted she and her husband were fine.

Then Ruth's phone buzzed. A message from Beth filled the screen.

MOM, SIMON WON'T LET ME BACK OUT. IF YOU LOVE WINNIE, DON'T CALL HIM.
