Chapter 8 - What We Didn't See

I watched the backyard clip three times. Doss moved through our garden with the easy confidence of someone who had been told he belonged there. He didn't touch the doors, but he walked around the potting shed and inspected the side path that connected our yard to the lane.

"He was measuring us," Micah said.

"He was assessing access," Moreno corrected. "We still need evidence of what he intended to do with it."

Anita arrived with an emergency application to challenge the forged property document. She'd also arranged for a locksmith and security professional to secure the house when police permitted. We could protect our property without turning ourselves into amateur detectives.

During a break, Ruth asked to speak with me alone. We sat in a small conference room under a humming light fixture.

"I've protected Beth from consequences for too long," she said.

I knew what she meant. When Beth failed to pay rent after college, we paid it. When she lied about a job, Ruth called the employer and begged for another chance. We always told ourselves she'd grow out of the panic and learn to stand on her own.

"I helped," I said. "I thought keeping the peace meant keeping the family safe."

"Did she ever feel like she belonged here?"

"I don't know. I tried to show her."

Ruth stared at the table. "Trying isn't the same as listening. But none of that makes what she did okay."

Winnie's laughter drifted down the hall and briefly softened the room.

Then Anita knocked. She carried a printout from a lender's public filing.

"Simon Kreel didn't lend Beth the ninety thousand himself," she said. "He bought her debt for a fraction of that. He could have settled it by selling her business equipment. Instead, he tied repayment to the proposed purchase of Rosebridge."

"Because he wants the land," Ruth said.

"Yes. And the price in his option is far below the offers you turned down."

Anita paused before adding, "There's a clause about immediate access. It is written as though you already gave him the keys."
