Chapter 13 - A CHAIR IS NOT A PROP

I knew the mechanics of my wheelchair better than I knew most people. It had carried me into grocery stores, doctors' offices, and the neighborhood bakery that insisted its entrance was accessible because somebody could lift me over the step.

A brake held open by ribbon wasn't harmless. It meant the chair wouldn't stay where I left it. Serena could say it rolled away. She had built the excuse before pushing me.

"I want to inspect it," I told Ellis.

"Our technician has it," she said. "You'll get the report. Don't put yourself through another encounter unless you need to."

I felt angry at being protected and grateful at the same time.

That afternoon Tessa's mother brought over homemade chicken soup. Tessa was too embarrassed to tell her how badly she needed the company. Her catering agency had dropped her, and college tuition was due in three weeks.

"You shouldn't lose your work for telling the truth," I said.

"My mom says I should have minded my own business," Tessa answered. "Then she cried when she saw the video."

Her mother, Elena Morales, set a container on our counter. "I said you have to survive as well as be brave. There's a difference."

Owen listened. Later he offered to cover Tessa's tuition. She refused.

"I didn't jump into the pool to make a rich friend," she said. "Please don't turn it into that."

Owen flushed. "You're right. I'm sorry."

For once he understood without asking me to translate.

Ellis called near dinner. The wheelchair technician confirmed the ribbon had obstructed the brake. The chair's metal parts also held marks consistent with a hard forward shove.

"We're taking this to the prosecutor," Ellis said. "Along with the witness statements and the video."

I thanked her, then sat very still.

A few minutes later Leah received an email from Graham's attorney. It demanded immediate repayment of the renovation loan and threatened to seize Bennett House within thirty days.

At the bottom, a final paragraph offered one way out.

I had to sign a statement saying Serena hadn't pushed me.
