Chapter 19 - THE QUESTION THAT REMAINED

I showed the message to Leah and Detective Ellis. It was preserved as evidence, not answered. Serena didn't get another conversation with me simply because she'd found a painful place to press.

But the question stayed.

Owen and I started counseling. At first I couldn't speak without listing the times he'd let Serena humiliate me. The broken ramp. The joke about the wheelchair. The invoices he'd told me to forget. The hesitation at the hospital.

"I thought keeping the peace was kindness," he said in one session.

"It wasn't peace for me," I answered. "It was just quiet for you."

The counselor let that sit between us. Owen didn't defend himself. He listened until I had nothing left to say.

Five weeks after the pool, we took a short walk through the neighborhood. I used my wheelchair because I wanted to be outside longer than my legs could manage. Owen walked beside me instead of pushing without asking. When the sidewalk narrowed, he asked which way I wanted to go.

The question was small. It mattered.

At thirty-eight weeks, June decided she was ready. We drove to the hospital at three in the morning, me breathing through contractions and Owen trying not to panic at every red light.

"You are allowed to be scared," I told him. "You are not allowed to make me manage your fear right now."

"Understood," he said, gripping the wheel a little less tightly.

Labor was hard, ordinary, and nothing like the disaster I'd imagined every night after the pool. A nurse talked me through each decision. Owen held my hand when I wanted it and stepped back when I didn't.

Just after noon, June Bennett arrived, furious at the brightness of the world and wonderfully loud about it.

They placed her against my chest. She had dark hair, ten perfect fingers, and a cry that made me laugh through tears.

Owen leaned close. "She's here."

I looked at him over our daughter's head.

"I need to ask you something," I said. "When telling the truth costs you the family you grew up with, which family will you choose?"
