Chapter 1 - THE SKILLET

The skillet hit Emma before I could reach the kitchen.

A hard metallic crack split the air.

Then my fourteen-month-old daughter toppled sideways from her little wooden chair and hit the tile.

"EMMA!"

I flew down the last three stairs so fast I nearly fell.

The cast-iron skillet lay beside her.

Vanessa stood over my baby with one hand still raised.

"Get out of my daughter's chair right now!" she shouted, as if Emma had done something wrong.

I dropped to the floor.

"Emma. Baby, open your eyes."

Her face was pale. A red mark was already forming near her temple.

Vanessa did not kneel. Did not apologize. Did not even look scared.

She pointed at Emma.

"Next time, she'll never forget it."

Something inside me broke.

I carefully lowered Emma flat, checked that she was breathing, then stood.

My hand moved before I thought.

The slap knocked Vanessa into the counter.

She screamed.

"Rachel!"

My mother-in-law, Margaret, rushed in from the dining room.

I grabbed my phone.

"Call 911," I said.

Margaret's face tightened.

"Don't make this bigger than it is."

I stared at her.

"She hit my baby with a skillet."

"It slipped."

Vanessa spun toward her.

"You said—"

Margaret cut her off with one sharp look.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was no greeting.

Just a video attachment and six words.

WATCH THE KITCHEN CAMERA BEFORE THEY DELETE IT.

My blood went cold.

I tapped play.

The video showed Emma sitting in her chair.

Vanessa stood beside her holding the skillet.

Margaret stood across the kitchen.

I turned up the sound.

Margaret's recorded voice said, "Make it look like an accident. Rachel has to lose custody before Friday."

I looked up.

Margaret's face went white.

"Did you stage this?"

May you like

She lunged for my phone.

And that was when I knew the skillet was only the beginning.
