Chapter 14 - THE FATHER HE NEVER KNEW

Michael read the DNA report without speaking.
Then he sat down.
"My uncle is my father."
Denise nodded slowly.
"Mrs. Patterson kept that box hidden for years."
The dates made sense.
Margaret and Stephen had an affair before Michael was born.
Richard raised him anyway.
Maybe Richard knew.
Maybe he did not.
Then I found another letter.
Richard's handwriting.
Michael,
Blood is not the same thing as fatherhood. If you ever find this, know that I knew. I chose you anyway.
Michael broke.
He pressed the letter to his face and cried like a child.
I wanted to comfort him.
I did not.
Not because I was cruel.
Because some grief belongs to the person carrying it.
The letter continued.
Stephen and Margaret have always believed Patterson Foods belongs to them. It does not. It belongs to the people whose work built it, and one day, if you are wise, you will stop confusing inheritance with worth.
At the bottom, Richard listed a safe-deposit box.
Lena obtained access.
Inside were revised corporate bylaws Richard had never filed.
They would strip family members of automatic board power.
A signed whistleblower statement.
And a sealed affidavit accusing Stephen and Margaret of embezzlement.
Richard had been ready to expose them.
Then he died.
Brooks now had motive for murder.
Stephen was arrested that evening on financial charges while the death investigation expanded.
Margaret still had not surfaced.
Then Vanessa asked to speak again.
She had remembered something.
"Mom has another house."
Michael frowned.
"What house?"
"Not in her name."
"Whose?"
"Charles's."
A lake property two hours north.
Police moved immediately.
They found Charles there.
Alive.
Bruised.
Locked in a basement.
He claimed Margaret had turned on him.
"She thinks everyone is going to betray her."
Brooks asked, "Where is she?"
Charles laughed bitterly.
"Where do you think?"
May you like
He looked at Michael.
"She's going to get Emma."
