Chapter 13 - THE WHITMORE NAME

The scandal exploded. Videos from the engagement party spread across social media. Millions watched Vanessa kick Naomi. Millions watched Naomi catch her ankle without striking back.
Then leaked reports revealed the planted bracelet and private investigator. Whitmore Developmentâs board panicked. Sponsors called. Richard refused to hide.
At a press conference, a reporter asked whether the family planned to silence Naomi. Richard looked offended. âWhy would we silence the only person in this story who behaved with dignity?â Another reporter asked if Ethan had been romantically involved with her. âAre you now?â Naomi, watching from a television in the staff cottage, nearly threw a cushion at the screen.
Ethan paused. âNo.â It was true. At least for now. âI owe you an apology.â âFor what?â âFor allowing Vanessaâs behavior to continue because I thought family matters should remain private.â Naomi shook her head.
âYou didnât kick me.â âNo. But people with authority are responsible for what they tolerate.â That sentence stayed with her. He offered her a yearâs salary and paid leave. Naomi refused the money.
âYou know, my security director is retiring.â âNo.â âI didnât finish.â âYou didnât need to.â For the first time, Naomi laughed freely. Then Ethan entered. Richard left them alone on purpose. Ethan looked uncomfortable.
Naomi smiled. âYou answered correctly.â âI know.â A pause. Then Ethan said, âIâm glad youâre here.â Naomiâs smile faded. âBe careful.â âIâm not asking for anything.â âGood.â âI just wanted you to know.â Before she could answer, her phone rang.

She answered. âMs. Reyes?â âYes.â âThis is Assistant District Attorney Paulson. Vanessa Sterling has requested a meeting.â Naomi frowned.
âWhy?â The prosecutor hesitated. âBecause she says Colin Mercer wasnât the person who gave him access to Lily Carterâs identity.â Naomi went still. âThen who was?â Paulsonâs voice lowered. âAccording to Vanessa, someone inside Whitmore House did.â
