Chapter 6 - THE SETUP

Vanessa chose something simple. A bracelet. Twenty thousand dollars. Easy to hide.
Easy to accuse someone of stealing. She slipped it into the pocket of Naomiâs spare uniform hanging in the staff laundry room. Then she called Ethan. She had seen this tactic before.
Not in mansions. In interrogation rooms. Someone creates a crime, plants proof and waits for fear. The house manager searched the staff area.
Vanessa folded her arms. âWell.â Ethan looked at Naomi. âDid you put it there?â âNo.â Vanessa laughed. âOf course sheâll say no.â Naomi remained still.
Richard entered. Richard examined the bracelet. Then Naomi asked one question. âCan we review the laundry-room camera?â Vanessaâs face barely changed.
But Naomi saw it. A flicker. The camera had been disabled for seventeen minutes that morning. Vanessa immediately said, âConvenient.â Naomi looked at her.
âVery.â Ethan turned. âWhat does that mean?â âNothing,â Vanessa snapped. Richardâs voice was colder. âIt means someone knew where the camera controls were.â Only three people had administrative access.
Ethan. Vanessa. Ethan stared at his fiancée. She laughed in disbelief.
âYou think I planted my own bracelet?â Nobody answered. She grabbed the bracelet and stormed away. Naomi expected the matter to end. It did not.
Later, Richard called her into his study. âI believe you.â âThank you.â âI also think Vanessa is escalating.â Naomi nodded. Richardâs jaw tightened. âYou should not have to leave because someone else cannot control herself.â Naomi almost smiled.

Then he added, âBut I want you to be careful.â Naomi had spent eight years being told to protect other people. It felt strange hearing someone say it to her. That night, she found a note under her cottage door. LEAVE BEFORE SATURDAY.
No signature. None was needed.
