Chapter 19 - THE BALLROOM AGAIN

One year after the disastrous engagement party, Whitmore House hosted another event. This time the ballroom was filled with staff, community leaders and survivors supported by a new workplace-safety foundation. Naomi had helped design it. No white roses.
No imported silk. No coronation. Richard stood at the microphone. âTonight, I would like it remembered for something better.â He announced a fund providing legal and emergency support to domestic workers, service employees and security staff facing abuse.
Then he asked Naomi to speak. She hated speeches. Margaret pushed her toward the stage. âGo.â Naomi stood beneath the same chandeliers where Vanessa had kicked her.

Then loudly. Ethan met her near the staircase. âYou were good.â âI hated every second.â âI know.â He handed her a small box. Naomi stared.
âEthan.â âRelax.â Inside was not a ring. It was a key. âI bought a place downtown.â âThatâs nice.â âI thought maybe eventuallyâif you wantedâwe could choose somewhere together.â Naomi closed the box. âNo surprise mansion?â âNo.â âNo three hundred guests?â âAbsolutely not.â âNo silver heels?â âNever again.â She laughed.

Then kissed him. Across the ballroom, Richard whispered to Margaret, âThink heâll marry her?â Margaret sipped champagne. âIf heâs smart, heâll let her decide.â Naomi heard them anyway. She turned.
âI heard that.â Margaret smiled. âI know.â
