Chapter 17 - The Names

Marilyn never reached the ladder. Daniels caught her on the roof, and by sunset she was in custody.
The metal case survived the fall down the stairs.
Inside were encrypted drives, fake IDs, bank ledgers, insurance policies, medical records, and a handwritten list of thirty-two families.
Marilyn had operated for more than a decade.
She recruited people who could enter wealthy homes unnoticed. Some became caregivers. Some assistants. Some romantic partners.
Vanessa had been one of her best.
Until she married Richard.
Then she started trying to keep money for herself.
“That’s why Marilyn turned on her,” Anna said.
Daniels nodded.
The evidence also linked Marilyn to Evan Brenner’s death.
His “heart attack” had followed a medication change.
Sophie’s fall had frightened him into rewriting part of his estate.
Anna looked at the floor.
“For five years I thought I failed that child.”
Daniels’ voice softened. “You didn’t.”
Anna nodded, but relief did not come cleanly. It came mixed with anger for every morning she had woken up believing someone else’s lie.
Then Daniels opened another file.
“This concerns Emily.”
Richard looked up.
A dashboard camera from a delivery truck had recorded the crash.
Emily’s car.
Marilyn’s SUV behind it.
Impact.
The footage was grainy but clear enough.
Richard covered his face.
Anna turned away.
Then Daniels continued.
“There’s more.”
He played audio recovered from Vanessa’s recorder.
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
Marilyn’s did not.
“If Emily talks, Richard loses everything. If she doesn’t survive, you become indispensable.”
Richard looked sick.
The next line was Vanessa’s.
“I won’t hurt her.”
Marilyn replied, “You won’t have to.”
The recording ended.
Anna expected Richard to collapse.
Instead, he stood.
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Recovering after surgery.”
“I want to see her.”
Daniels blocked him.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
The officer looked at Anna.
“Because Vanessa just woke up.”
Richard waited.

Daniels’ face was grim.
“And she says Anna was part of Marilyn’s operation.”
