Chapter 14 - Isabella’s Father

Isabella stared at the record.
Patient: Miguel Cruz.
Ten years earlier.
Her father.
She sat very still.
Ethan nodded.
“The trial involved diagnostic imaging support.”
Brooke covered her mouth.
Isabella looked at her.
“Did your family know?”
Brooke whispered, “I didn’t.”
Isabella turned to Ethan.
“What does false negative mean?”
He answered carefully.
“It means the software may have failed to flag something the doctors should have reviewed.”
“May have?”
“We need experts.”
“My father died.”
“I know.”
“No. You know paper.”
Her voice cracked.
“I watched him die.”
Ethan took the anger.
Isabella stood.
“Was Sterling responsible?”
“I don’t know yet.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Isa.”
She pulled away.
“No.”
She looked at Brooke.
“You pushed him away from the table because he looked weak.”
Brooke flinched.
Tears ran down Isabella’s face.
“He couldn’t eat. Couldn’t stand. People talked around him like he was furniture.”
The room went silent.
“That’s why I helped Ethan.”
Now Ethan understood.
It had been memory.
Isabella continued.
“I promised myself I would never treat somebody that way.”
Brooke started crying.
Isabella looked at her.
Brooke whispered, “I know.”
Ethan said, “You didn’t lose it.”
Isabella turned.
“What?”
“You work for the caterer?”
“Yes.”
“Not anymore.”
She frowned.
“For me.”
“What?”
Everyone stared.
Isabella laughed through tears.
“I serve chicken.”
“You noticed a service failure before executives noticed a company failure.”
“No.”
He smiled faintly.
“It may be more useful.”
She shook her head.
“You are impossible.”
“Frequently.”
Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.
The independent medical reviewer had found the original trial logs.
Seven.
And someone had changed the database after the fact.
