Chapter 19 - Ethan’s Blind Spot

The executive was Robert Hale.
Ethan’s longtime strategy chief.
His friend for twelve years.
The email had come from a junior analyst.
Subject: MERCER CONFLICT EXPOSURE.
Robert marked it reviewed.
Then archived it.
No escalation.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Marcus sat across from him.
“You want me to handle it?”
“No.”
He looked calm until Ethan showed him the email.
Then he looked tired.
“Why?”
Robert sat.
“You didn’t ask.”
“No.”
“You didn’t forward it.”
“No.”
“You didn’t tell me.”
“You were in rehab.”
That answer made Ethan angrier.
“So?”
“You were barely sleeping.”
“So?”
“You were learning to stand.”
“So?”
Robert’s voice rose.
Silence.
Ethan almost laughed.
The phrase again.
Protect you.
Protect the family.
Protect value.
Protect the company.
A phrase people used before making decisions for someone else.
He looked at Robert.
“Yes.”
“That is not protection.”
Robert looked down.
“I know that now.”
Ethan thought about Brooke.
Martin.
Even himself.
Was it useful?
Yes.
Was it clean?
No.
Isabella had warned him: no more secret tests.
Now he understood why.
Robert looked shocked.
“Twelve years.”
“I know.”
“You know me.”
“I thought I did.”
That hurt.
Ethan hated that it hurt.
After Robert left, Isabella stood in the doorway.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She nodded.
No advice.
No speech.
Just presence.
He looked at her.
“You were right.”
“That happens a lot.”
“Don’t ruin it.”
She smiled.
He looked toward the wheelchair folded near the window.
He still used it on bad days.
Sometimes all day.
Strangers congratulated him as if mobility were a moral achievement.
He hated that too.
“What are you thinking?” Isabella asked.
“And?”
She thought.
That irritated him.
Then Marcus called.
Chad had accepted a plea agreement.
Martin was negotiating.
The Sterling investigation was nearing resolution.

The test was ending.
But Ethan’s real lesson had only started.
