Chapter 1 - The Doorway

"Put it down, Vanessa."
Vanessa Sterling froze with the riding crop still in her hand.
Six-year-old Ethan was on the marble floor behind Maria, shaking so hard his teeth clicked. Maria had both arms around him, her black nanny uniform rumpled where she had thrown herself between the boy and the woman who was supposed to become his stepmother.
Alexander stepped inside, rain shining on the shoulders of his black overcoat.
He was supposed to be in Boston until tomorrow.
Vanessa recovered first. "Alexander, thank God. She lost control. Maria attacked me. Ethan was having one of his episodes and-"
"Daddy!"
Ethan tore free and ran.
Alexander dropped to one knee and caught him. The boy buried his face against his father's neck.
"I'm here," Alexander said. "You're safe."
Then Ethan whispered something.
Alexander went still.
His eyes lifted to Vanessa.
"How long?"
Vanessa blinked. "How long what?"
"How long have you been hurting my son when I'm gone?"
A murmur moved through the room.
"He's confused," Vanessa said quickly. "You know how emotional he gets."
Maria stood.
Her knees were trembling, but her voice wasn't.
"He remembers more than you think."
Vanessa's face sharpened. "You keep out of this."
Maria reached into her apron and pulled out her phone.
"I tried that," she said. "Then I realized no one would believe a nanny over you."
Vanessa stared at the phone.
Maria unlocked it.
"So I started recording."
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
Alexander rose slowly, Ethan clinging to his hand.
"What's on it?"
Maria looked at him.
"Not just what she did to Ethan."
Vanessa lunged.
Alexander caught her wrist before she reached Maria.
"Give me that phone!" Vanessa screamed.
Maria backed away and opened a hidden folder.
"Alexander," she said, "your son wasn't the real reason she wanted me gone."
He stared at her.
Maria pressed play.
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
A dead woman's voice.
May you like
Julia Blackwood's voice.
And the first words were: "If Alexander is hearing this, then Vanessa lied."
