Chapter 19 - Maria's Name

Maria stared at the bank record.

"I've never seen that account."

Brooks believed her enough not to cuff her.

Not enough to ignore it.

"Someone used your Social Security number and an old address."

Alexander looked at Maria. "Who had access?"

She thought of payroll.

Background checks.

Employment records.

Vanessa.

Owen searched the house system and found a scan of Maria's personnel file on Vanessa's laptop.

But the bank account had been opened eight months before Maria started at Blackwood House.

Maria felt the floor shift under her.

"That's impossible."

Elena asked to see the application.

Her face changed.

"I opened it."

Maria stared at her sister.

"What?"

Elena explained that she had created an emergency account under Maria's name while hiding from Martin. She planned to use it if she had to move Maria quickly.

She never funded it.

She never closed it.

Martin found it.

"I was trying to protect you," Elena said.

Maria laughed once, bitterly.

"Everybody keeps saying that right before they admit they lied to me."

Elena cried.

Maria did not comfort her.

Not yet.

At the preliminary hearing, Vanessa faced child abuse charges, attempted evidence destruction, conspiracy, and financial crimes. Martin faced homicide conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and a list long enough to exhaust the clerk reading it.

After court, Maria found Alexander alone on the courthouse steps.

"You okay?" she asked.

"No."

Then he handed her an envelope.

Maria frowned. "What's this?"

"A termination agreement."

Her stomach dropped.

Alexander continued, "For your job as Ethan's nanny."

She looked at him, hurt and furious.

Then he added, "Because he doesn't need an employee who can be fired whenever a powerful person gets uncomfortable."

Maria opened the envelope.

Inside was not severance.

It was an offer to become director of the new Blackwood Child Safety Foundation, funded by recovered trust money and independent of the family company.

Maria looked up.

Alexander said, "You protected my son when everyone else froze. I want you to help build something that protects other kids before they need someone to throw themselves in front of a whip."

Then Ethan ran down the courthouse steps toward them.

"Maria!"

He held something behind his back.

"I found this in Mommy's blue room."

Alexander and Maria exchanged a look.

Ethan held out one final sealed letter.
