Chapter 11 - The Father Who Came Back

Nora saw her father through the church's side window.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
For one second, she was fourteen again.
Then anger returned.
She entered without waiting for the agents.
Daniel stood near the altar beside Evelyn.
He looked at Nora.
His face broke.
"Baby girl."
She slapped him.
Hard.
Evelyn gasped.
Daniel did not move.
"You don't get to call me that."
His eyes filled.
"Fair."
Adrian almost smiled at the familiar answer.
Nora turned on Evelyn.
"And you. You knew?"
"Not all the time."
"How long?"
"Three years."
Nora laughed bitterly.
"Wonderful. Only three."
Daniel tried to explain.
After escaping Boston, he entered a private witness-protection arrangement outside normal federal channels because some agents were compromised.
When Mark Bell was killed, Daniel trusted almost no one.
He moved constantly.
Claire knew he survived but not where.
Years later, he learned Pike had built a new criminal network around old Vale contacts.
Daniel came back under the name Michael Crane.
"Why hire me?" Nora asked.
His face tightened.
"I didn't want to."
"You approved it."
"Elias found out you were already researching Adrian. He said if we didn't guide you, you'd walk into worse danger alone."
"So you put me in his house?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"I believed Adrian would protect her if he knew who she was."
Nora turned.
"You knew from the beginning?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Not until three months ago."
Daniel said, "I sent him proof."
"Why?"
"Because Pike was watching you."
Silence filled the church.
Then Nora asked the question she had carried for twelve years.
"Why didn't you come home?"
Daniel looked destroyed.
"Because the first time I tried, someone put a bomb under your mother's car."
Nora stopped breathing.
"What?"
"She wasn't in it. But the message was clear."
He looked at Evelyn.
"And the person who ordered it wasn't Pike."
Nora whispered, "Who?"
May you like
Daniel's eyes moved to Adrian.
"Vincent Vale."
