Chapter 10 - The Engagement Plan

The appraisal made no sense.
Adrian had bought Vanessa’s ring eleven weeks before proposing.
The storage document was dated months earlier.
Rachel called the jeweler.
The truth arrived quickly.
Vanessa had visited first.
She selected the stone.
Asked for valuation options.
Asked what insurance documentation would look like if a future fiancé bought it.
Then Adrian later came in after Vanessa repeatedly mentioned the store.
She had designed her own surprise.
That alone was not a crime.
But it changed the picture.
She had been planning the engagement before Adrian knew he wanted one.
Claire stared at the receipt.
“She staged the whole thing.”
Evelyn corrected gently.
“She influenced it.”
Vanessa was manipulative enough without turning every moment into hypnosis.
The deeper problem sat in an email recovered from Patricia’s account.
Once the ring is on, board access becomes easier.
Vanessa replied:
He trusts me more than he trusts anyone.
Another message:
Thomas is the only obstacle.
After Thomas died of a heart attack, Vanessa wrote:
One obstacle removed itself.
Naomi found him on the terrace.
“I feel stupid.”
“Your father told you not to.”
“He wrote that before I needed it.”
“He knew you.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“I brought her into this house.”
“Yes.”
“I defended her when staff complained.”
“Yes.”
“I told Elena she was sensitive.”
“Yes.”
“You’re not helping.”
“You didn’t ask me to help you feel better.”
That almost made him smile.
Then Naomi added:
“You can be wrong without making yourself the victim.”
Inside, investigators traced the vendor money.
Of the $640,000, roughly $410,000 had eventually reached accounts controlled by Patricia.
Another $130,000 went to a luxury property deposit in Vanessa’s name.
The rest was dispersed through legitimate-looking expenses.
Then Rachel found the worst part.
A draft wedding-week board resolution.
It named Vanessa as a temporary Foundation director “to support donor continuity during Adrian Cole’s honeymoon absence.”
Adrian had never seen it.
His signature block was already prepared.
And Marcus’s security certificate had been attached.
Naomi looked at the metadata.

Everyone turned toward Evelyn Cole.
The aunt who had hired Naomi.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“That isn’t me.”
May you like
Naomi’s expression hardened.
“Then someone wanted us to think it was.”
