Chapter 19 - The Cost of Looking Away

Six months later, Naomi took the witness stand again, this time in the criminal trial.
Martin Cross and Dr. Wren had already entered guilty pleas in connection with their roles. Celeste had chosen to contest the charges. Naomi was nervous, but she had learned that fear didn't mean she had to be silent.
The prosecutor showed the jury the future-dated document, the copied signatures, the misleading medical video, and records of money moving through Alder Bridge. Medical experts testified about Evelyn's condition. Investigators explained what they could verify and what remained uncertain.
Then Celeste's lawyer asked Naomi if she resented wealthy people.
"No," Naomi said. "I resent being told a woman's word doesn't count because she cleans someone else's house."
"You expect this jury to believe you over my client?"
"I expect them to look at the evidence."
Adrian testified too.
He admitted he had handed Celeste access she should never have had. He admitted dismissing his mother's concerns. He did not ask the jury to excuse his choices because he'd been in love.
"My silence made it easier for her," he said. "I have to live with that."
After deliberations, the jury returned guilty verdicts on the central fraud charges and on charges connected to the abuse of Evelyn. Celeste stood motionless as the clerk read them. Sentencing was set for a later date.
Outside the courthouse, cameras flashed. Naomi turned away from them and walked toward Evelyn, who was waiting beneath a maple tree.
"You did well," Evelyn said.
"I thought I'd be relieved."
"Maybe relief comes slowly."
June had more news. The trust's recoveries and court-supervised agreements would help replace most of the missing funds, but several programs had suspended new enrollment during the investigation.
Evelyn looked at the stack of letters in June's hands.

A clinic director was asking whether she'd have to turn families away before winter.
Evelyn took the letter, read it, and said, "Then our work isn't finished."
