Chapter 20 - Signed With Today's Date

By spring, the Lantern Trust had an independent finance committee, patient advocates, and new rules requiring multiple verified signatures before major transfers. Recoveries and unrestricted donations approved by the board had covered the losses.

No clinic had to close.

Adrian offered to replace the missing money himself. Evelyn insisted the independent trustees decide what to accept.

"You don't fix a system by trading one powerful person's wishes for another's," she told him.

He listened.

The wedding flowers had been donated. Celeste had been sentenced. Adrian no longer tried to repair the damage with gifts or speeches. He showed up, answered difficult questions, and stopped expecting forgiveness on demand.

Naomi had completed training as a patient advocate and earned a paid role at a Lantern clinic through an independent hiring process. Her job was to listen when frightened people said something was wrong.

On her first day, Evelyn arrived with homemade lemon cookies.

"You don't have to bring me things," Naomi said.

"I know. That's why I wanted to."

Adrian came later with the trust's new safeguarding policy.

"I should've believed Mom," he told Naomi. "And I should've listened to you without making you prove you mattered."

"Remember that when someone with less money walks into your office," she replied.

"I will."

Evelyn opened the policy to its final page. Every signature had been verified. Naomi noticed the date.

Today.

No tomorrow printed in advance. No borrowed handwriting. No frightened woman forced to hold a pen.

Evelyn slipped her hand into Naomi's.

"Do you know what I remember most? The moment you dropped that tray because you couldn't stand to watch someone hurt me."

Naomi looked at the tiny scar on her palm from the broken cup.

"I was scared," she admitted.

"So was I," Evelyn said. "But you stayed."

The clinic door opened. A young father entered holding a little girl's hand. Naomi stood to welcome them.

May you like

This time, nobody had to wonder whether someone would listen.

THE END
