Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

I stopped feeling afraid.

Fear was too small.

What came next was rage.

Nathan reached for the intercom. "Vanessa, listen to me-"

Static.

Then her voice returned.

"Not you, Nathan. Maya."

Sophia watched my face, reading me the way she always did when sound couldn't help her.

Vanessa continued. "Take the documents to the greenhouse. Alone. Five minutes."

Nathan shook his head. "You're not going."

"She threatened my child."

"That's exactly why you're not going."

I looked at Sophia. She was signing fast.

NOT ALONE. CAMERA.

"What camera?" I asked.

She pointed toward a smoke detector.

Nathan's eyes narrowed. "The indoor system went down with the power."

Sophia shook her head and signed:

SMALL CAMERA. WOMAN CAMERA.

A private camera.

Vanessa had been watching inside the house.

Nathan's face went cold. He searched the desk and found a hidden monitor behind a stack of wedding folders. Six tiny feeds showed the kitchen, Nathan's bedroom, the medicine cabinet, the upstairs hallway, the greenhouse, and-

Sophia's play corner beside the service pantry.

I felt sick.

"She was watching my daughter."

Nathan whispered, "And me."

One screen blinked. The greenhouse.

Vanessa stood under hanging vines with a gun pressed against the back of Mrs. Alvarez, the seventy-two-year-old housekeeper who had worked for the Cole family since Nathan was a boy.

Vanessa smiled into the camera.

"Four minutes."

Mrs. Alvarez's face was wet with tears.

Nathan grabbed the envelope. "I'll take it."

"She said me."

"She needs you scared. She needs me useful."

Dr. Price, still on the floor, whispered, "She needs the originals destroyed."

I looked at the safe.

"Then we give her copies."

Nathan stared at me for half a second, then understood.

We used Vanessa's printer.

I folded the copies into the envelope and tucked the originals inside Sophia's coloring book.

I knelt before my daughter and signed:

STAY WITH NATHAN. DO NOT LEAVE.

Sophia shook her head hard.

I kissed her forehead.

MOM COMES BACK.

Then I walked into the dark hallway toward the greenhouse.

Halfway there, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.
