THE BLACK DYE WEDDING / Chapter 17 / 20

Chapter 17 - THE PERSON WHO FINALLY SPOKE

The sealed page named Ruth as successor trustee if Helen concealed transactions or failed to provide the required reports. It wasn't enough by itself to change control, Amelia explained, but it gave the court clearer evidence of Rose's intentions.

“We can ask the court to enforce it,” she said. “And we will.”

Daniel called that night. His voice sounded older than it had at the wedding.

“I have Mom's messages,” he said. “All of them.”

He came to Amelia's office the next morning without Helen. He placed his laptop on the table and opened a thread from six months before the wedding.

Mom had written: Evelyn won't question the paperwork if she thinks it's for Vanessa's business application. She trusts me.

Daniel had replied: We should ask her directly.

Helen: And risk her saying no? She never understands what family needs.

Another message instructed Daniel to witness a signature already on a page. There was a photograph of the supposed notary stamp. Daniel admitted he'd been afraid to disappoint Mom and embarrassed by his own part in it.

“I'm not asking you to forgive me,” he said, looking at me. “I should have stopped her.”

I wanted to scream at him. Instead I asked, “Will you tell the truth even if she never speaks to you again?”

“Yes.”

Amelia arranged for Daniel to give a formal statement, preserve his devices, and cooperate with investigators. She separately confirmed with the retired notary that the stamp on the guarantee was not authorized.

When Daniel left, I followed him into the hallway.

“I loved you,” I said. “I trusted you with the things I didn't tell anybody else.”

He nodded, tears in his eyes. “I know.”

“That's why this hurts.”

He didn't ask me to make him feel better. It was the first decent thing he'd done in weeks.

Before he reached the elevator, he turned.

“Evelyn, Mom is meeting Vanessa tonight. She wants her to sign a statement saying she acted alone.”
