Chapter 6 - The Man at the Hospital

Olivia had never married.
At least not according to public records.
But a man named Eric Sloan had checked her into St. Matthew’s Medical Center as her spouse.
He authorized emergency treatment.
Then disappeared.
I knew the name.
Eric Sloan worked for Whitmore Security.
He had been standing near the ballroom entrance when Emma arrived.
Police pulled the wedding footage.
There he was.
The moment he saw Emma enter carrying Ava, he texted someone.
Then he left.
Camille shouted to stop the wedding thirty seconds later.
Coincidence had officially run out.
Olivia was conscious when I entered her room.
There was a bandage above her eyebrow and bruising along one arm.
She stared at me.
Then whispered, “You came.”
I pulled a chair close.
“Emma found me.”
Her eyes filled.
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Ava?”
“Safe.”
Olivia cried.
I didn’t touch her until she reached for my hand.
Then she asked, “Did Camille marry you?”
“No.”
Relief crossed her face.
That hurt in a strange way.
I asked, “What happened this morning?”
“A car followed me.”
“Whose?”
“I don’t know.”
“Eric Sloan?”
She looked shocked.
“You know about Eric?”
“He checked you in as your husband.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
“He was supposed to help me.”
“With what?”
She looked toward the door.
“Getting the original trust amendment.”
“From where?”
“Your father’s old storage vault.”
I stared.
Olivia swallowed.
“Alexandre, your father knew I was pregnant.”
The room tilted.
“What?”
“He met me on November 17.”
The day she disappeared.
The day the trust changed.
“He said he would protect Emma.”
“Then why did you vanish?”
Olivia started crying again.
“Because three hours after I left him, Martin Shaw called me.”
My family lawyer.
“He said your father had changed his mind.”
“What did he send you?”
“The waiver.”
The forged waiver.
Then Olivia whispered, “But before your father died, he mailed me one final thing.”
“What?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
May you like
She looked at me.
“The box Camille has been trying to find for seven years.”
