Chapter 8 - Uncle Robert

Robert Hale answered my call on the second ring.
“Alexandre.”
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Stay there.”
Silence.
Then he said, “You opened the box.”
Not a question.
I ended the call.
Police reached his home before I did.
“You should have left the past buried.”
I wanted to hit him.
I didn’t.
I had spent the day learning how many people counted on anger making me easier to control.
So I sat.
“Tell me what happened.”
Robert stared into his glass.
My father had changed the trust after learning Olivia was pregnant.
That amendment meant any verified biological child would receive protected voting rights.
Robert feared it would destabilize Hale Development.
Charles Whitmore feared it would block a merger he had been planning for years.
Martin feared losing both families as clients.
The word landed like a stone.
“You let me believe Olivia left.”
“I thought you’d move on.”
“You let my daughter grow up without me.”
“We didn’t know for certain she was yours.”
“You made sure I never checked.”
He had no answer.
I asked about my father.
Robert’s face changed.
“He found out.”
“When?”
“Two days before the stroke.”
My father discovered Martin had sent the waiver using his signature certificate.
He threatened to report them.
Then he suffered a stroke.
Natural, Robert insisted.
Then I asked the question that mattered now.
“Why Camille?”
Robert looked at me.
“Because Charles needed the trust neutralized before the acquisition.”
“How?”
“Marriage.”
I frowned.
“Marriage doesn’t cancel a child’s rights.”
“No.”
He took a breath.
“But a spouse with temporary proxy rights could vote during a paternity dispute.”
I stood.
“Camille knew?”
Robert nodded.
“From the beginning.”
My phone rang.
Lena.
The paternity test was back.
I put it on speaker.
Her voice was steady.
“Alexandre, Emma is your daughter.”
May you like
I closed my eyes.
Then Lena added, “And someone just filed an emergency petition to take her into protective custody.”
