Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Was Dead

Camilla Bellini was alive.

Valentina had told everyone her mother died after a stroke in Italy.

Camilla stepped out of the sedan wearing a dark coat and carrying one suitcase.

Security searched her.

No weapon.

No phone.

Just documents.

I met her in the library with Luca and two detectives present.

“Why fake your death?” I asked.

“Marcus.”

Her answer came without hesitation.

Marcus threatened to implicate her.

Valentina helped arrange a new identity and staged the funeral.

“You helped them approach Isabella.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

“Did you have anything to do with her accident?”

“No.”

The detectives already knew the crash record.

Camilla’s statement matched the existing evidence.

No conspiracy there.

Then she opened her suitcase.

Inside were copies of Marcus’s oldest ledgers.

And letters from Valentina.

One letter was written six months after our wedding.

Mama,

I think I made a mistake. Domenico trusts me. Ethan loves him. Ruby follows me around the house asking me to braid her hair. Marcus says feelings are weakness, but I don’t know how much longer I can do this.

Then Camilla handed me a second letter.

Written last month.

Mama,

Marcus says we are too deep now. If Ruby stays in the house, the trust remains under Dom. We need the hearing. Once the waterfront vote passes, I can put everything back.

Everything back.

As if a child’s home were a chair you could borrow.

As if a forged diagnosis could be erased.

As if fear left no memory.

Camilla looked at me.

“She convinced herself she was protecting Ethan.”

“She was protecting money.”

“She stopped knowing the difference.”

The detective asked why Camilla returned now.

She looked toward the ceiling.

“Because I saw the banquet video online.”

Someone had leaked it.

The chair being pulled.

Ruby falling.

Me carrying her.

Camilla’s face tightened.

“I spent my life teaching my children that survival justified anything.”

Then she said:

“I came back because I finally saw what they learned.”
