Chapter 16 - Rocco

Nico found his car near the George Washington Bridge.

Empty.

Phone inside.

No sign of him.

Rocco had not helped create the guardianship plan.

He had helped delay me.

Marcus needed time for Valentina to humiliate Ruby publicly, move the suitcases, and create a scene suggesting the child was unwanted.

So Marcus attacked.

Rocco’s message at 7:18 p.m. read:

KEEP DOM IN THE ROOM TEN MORE MINUTES.

Marcus replied:

TOO LATE. HE SAW HER.

Two days later, Rocco surrendered through an attorney.

He admitted Marcus paid him $300,000 to manipulate council schedules and leak internal board information.

He said he never knew Ruby would be sent to Saint Catherine.

Maybe true.

Maybe not.

The prosecutor would decide what he could prove.

What mattered to me was the pattern.

That was his real talent.

Not force.

Leverage.

At trial, Rocco’s testimony buried him.

The jury convicted Marcus on major fraud, conspiracy, forgery-related, and financial charges.

The assault against me added another count.

The child-related conspiracy brought the most attention.

Marcus showed no emotion when the verdict was read.

Until the judge mentioned Ruby.

Then he looked at me.

“You ruined this family.”

I stood quietly.

No response.

He had confused exposure with destruction.

After court, the child advocate called.

“There’s a decision about Ethan.”

My stomach tightened.

“What decision?”

“His biological father has been located.”

I had never met the man.

Valentina said he vanished before Ethan was born.

The advocate continued.

“He wants custody.”

Ethan was in my kitchen eating cereal when I got home.

He looked up and smiled.

I had no idea how to tell him another adult had just appeared to claim his life.
