Chapter 13 - Names on the Ledger

Victoria found Marcus in the old boiler room beneath the estate. She had a bruised jaw and a stolen tablet tucked beneath her coat.

“I helped build the monitoring network,” she told him. “I told myself the girls were safe because I didn't see anyone hurt in front of me.”

Marcus stared at the screen she offered him. Invoices listed medical shipments to four private facilities. Next to each amount was a child's designation: C-2, C-4, C-9, C-12.

“Where are those places?” he asked.

“Two states away. One overseas. I don't even know if those children are alive.”

“Then we'll find out.”

They copied the records onto a drive Ortiz's contact could publish. Victoria added video logs from the laboratory and recorded her own statement. On the screen she looked smaller without her white coat.

“My name is Dr. Victoria Shaw,” she said. “I helped conceal illegal research. If these files are authentic when investigators receive them, hold me responsible too.”

Upstairs, Clara was being marched along a corridor lined with framed pictures of smiling children. She stopped at one. It showed her twelfth birthday at the estate, a cake, Evelyn, and Voss clapping while she blew out candles.

June appeared beside the security men, being escorted to the core. “I remember that day,” she whispered. “I watched from downstairs.”

Clara felt anger rise, hot enough to overpower the blue pull in her muscles. “You should have been at the table.”

June managed a crooked smile. “Would you have shared the cake?”

“I'd have given you the biggest piece.”

Their hands touched for a second before a guard separated them.

A ceiling speaker came alive. “All medical subjects are to be transferred immediately. External broadcast detected.”

Victoria's face appeared on every monitor.

“My name is Dr. Victoria Shaw,” she began.

Voss shouted for someone to cut the power, but her confession kept playing.
