Chapter 19 - The Girl Who Remembered

I met Grace in a sunny room with paper stars in the window. Rosa sat nearby, and Elena kept one hand open on the table so her daughter could reach for it whenever she wanted.

Grace had Vincent's eyes and Elena's smile. She held her rabbit by one worn ear and studied my stomach with solemn interest.

"Is there a baby in there?" she asked.

"There is. A little girl."

"What's her name?"

I took a breath. "Grace."

She blinked. "That's my name."

"I know. Someone who cared about you helped us choose it. His name was Daniel."

Grace pressed the rabbit to her cheek. "He took me to see an apple tree. He said I was brave because I climbed the small steps by myself."

My chest ached. Daniel had once told me he'd learned courage from a child who wasn't afraid of a tall ladder. I'd thought he meant a nephew. I saw now how carefully he'd been trying to tell me something without putting anyone at risk.

Vincent arrived later for his scheduled visit. He stopped in the doorway instead of rushing toward her.

"Hello, Grace," he said. "I'm Vincent."

She looked at Elena. "Is he the daddy who didn't know?"

"Yes, sweetheart," Elena said. "He knows now."

Vincent knelt, leaving space between them. "I'm sorry I wasn't there. I can't change that. I can come back tomorrow if you want me to."

Grace considered him. "Can you read the rabbit book?"

"I'd like that."

Elena watched them from across the room. She and Vincent had years of hurt to speak through. Nobody called it a reunion of a happy marriage. But there was a child in the room asking for a story, and both of them were willing to stay.

When I returned home, Mrs. Park handed me an envelope Daniel had addressed to our future child. Inside was a letter with a date and one instruction.

Read this when she comes into the world.
