Chapter 10 - PIER NINE

September seventeenth. Alessandro had spent eighteen years avoiding that date. At twenty-five, he had delivered a sealed steel case from Pier Nine to his father's office. His father claimed it contained proof Isabella had sold routes to a rival organization.
"Did you open it?" Mara asked.
"No. Enzo told me loyalty meant not asking questions."
"And you believed him?"
"I was proud that they finally trusted me." He looked at her directly. "That pride helped them."
They met Detective Rios at the old pier. An elderly maintenance supervisor, Frank Deluca, agreed to talk when he learned whose daughter Mara was.
"Your mom came here with a little camera," he told her. "She'd found invoices for shipments that never arrived. She said money was moving through empty containers."
"Did you see who hurt her?"
Frank shook his head. "I heard an argument. Your grandfather was there. Then a gunshot. I ran, and a black car pulled out with the lights off."
He had hidden one thing for years: a handwritten gate log. The entry beside Carlo's vehicle had been changed in a different pen. Its original time placed Carlo at the dock twenty minutes after the gunshot, not before.
"I lied because Enzo threatened my son," Frank said. "My son died last year. I'm done lying."
Back at headquarters, the auditor discovered payments from Sterling Capital to a company controlled by Enzo on the exact date of Daniel's supposed accident. The money was labeled 'clean-up services.'
Mara sat down hard. "My father didn't have an accident."
Rios refused to promise what evidence could prove, but she opened a separate homicide review.
That evening Alessandro found a fresh message on his private number.
