Chapter 18 - The Words She Couldn't Take Back

I didn't listen to Iris's recording alone. She gave it to investigators, who preserved the original and reviewed it with her attorney. Later, with permission, she told me what it contained.

Vanessa's voice was faint but clear.

"Keep the waitress away until the release is signed," she said. "And make sure Ortiz looks violent when the cameras roll."

Pike asked whether she wanted Iris's phone destroyed.

"No," Vanessa said. "Just make sure nobody gets it until we're done."

I sat very still. The kick, the photographs, the false accusation, Iris locked downstairs—they hadn't been separate bursts of cruelty. They had been scheduled work.

The recording didn't prove every dollar of the financial case. Investigators still needed contracts, bank records, and witnesses. But it supported the account we'd been giving since that night.

Weeks passed. Elliot's foundation appointed outside trustees. They began recovering disputed payments and published an emergency housing plan. Some families moved into safe apartments quickly. Others stayed in temporary rooms longer than anyone wanted.

Elliot called me once.

"I should have read what I signed," he said.

"Yes," I answered.

"I thought paying for good things meant I was doing good."

"It doesn't work that way."

He didn't ask me to forgive him. I was grateful for that.

Then, on a rainy Thursday, Sloane called with news that made me stop in the grocery-store aisle.

"Prosecutors have filed charges," she said. "Vanessa and Pike are both named."
