Chapter 13 - LEVEL THREE

Travis made it to Level Three before security boxed him in.

He had no weapon.

He didn’t need one to terrify Mia.

From behind Leah, she saw him between two parked cars.

He looked tired now. Smaller.

Not like the giant who had controlled their house.

“Mia,” he called. “Come here.”

She pressed her face into Leah’s coat.

“You’re scaring her,” Leah said.

“I’m family.”

“That stopped being a defense a long time ago.”

Travis laughed bitterly.

“You think Erin can raise those kids? She can barely pay the mortgage.”

“Then you help without stealing.”

“I was owed.”

“For what?”

“For everything I did after Ben died.”

Mia lifted her head.

“You yelled.”

Travis’s face changed.

“You locked food,” she continued.

“Mia—”

“You said Caleb cried because he was bad.”

“Stop.”

“And you said Mommy would leave if I told.”

His voice sharpened. “I said stop.”

Security moved in.

Travis backed against a concrete pillar.

Then Dana appeared from the ramp with two officers.

“It’s over, Travis.”

He stared at her.

“Erin?”

“Alive.”

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Dana cuffed him without drama.

No heroic fight.

No last-minute escape.

Just a man discovering that control ended the moment other adults finally did their jobs.

As he was led away, Travis looked at Mia.

“This is your fault.”

Mia flinched.

Leah stepped between them.

“No,” she said clearly. “It’s his.”

Mia stared up at her.

His.

Not hers.

The word landed somewhere deep.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Erin stepped out in a hospital gown beneath a borrowed coat.

Mia didn’t move at first.

She simply stared.

“Mommy?”

Erin dropped to her knees.

Mia ran.

But as Erin wrapped both arms around her daughter, Carol began crying behind them.

Erin looked over Mia’s shoulder.

Her face hardened.

May you like

“You knew,” she said.

And Carol had no answer.
