Chapter 15 - Robert’s Lawyer

Daniel Price was eighty-two.

Retired.

Careful.

He opened the briefcase.

Inside was a sealed file.

“Robert told me to release this if Laura was ever charged with a crime involving you.”

Margaret stared.

“He planned for this?”

“Years ago.”

That was painful in its own way.

Robert had feared Laura longer than anyone knew.

The file contained letters Robert wrote but never sent.

To Margaret.

To Laura.

To himself.

One line appeared repeatedly:

Margaret closed her eyes.

Daniel explained that after Michael’s death, Robert intervened everywhere.

School discipline.

Debt.

Jobs.

Relationships.

Every crisis.

Every consequence.

Laura learned someone would fix it.

Then, ten years ago, Robert stopped.

That was when Laura’s resentment grew.

“She called him cruel,” Margaret whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“He called it late parenting.”

Robert had arranged for an independent fiduciary to manage finances if Margaret became incapacitated.

Laura would receive a modest inheritance.

No direct control.

The cat shelter provision was exactly what Harris said.

Nothing more.

Margaret laughed sadly.

“She thought he gave everything to Charlie.”

“Robert suspected she might.”

For Laura.

Margaret did not open it.

She gave it to her daughter’s lawyer.

Weeks later, Laura read it in a supervised meeting.

Robert’s letter said:

I love you. I also no longer trust you with your mother’s money.

Both things can be true.

Laura cried.

Then tore the letter in half.

The prosecutor offered a plea on the financial charges while the death investigation continued.

Laura refused.

She insisted Robert died naturally.

The sedative in Robert’s blood likely contributed materially to the cardiac event.

Combined with his heart condition, it increased risk significantly.

Laura was charged in connection with Robert’s death.

Margaret sat silently when she heard.

Then Charlie began crying.

Not loudly.

Just once.

Margaret picked him up.

“I know.”

This time, they were grieving the same person for two different reasons.
