Chapter 8 - The Missing Red Toolbox

The shelter had security cameras.
Not great ones.
But enough.
We reviewed footage from the donation day.
At 7:42 p.m., Laura carried two boxes through the back entrance.
She knew the code.
Margaret had given it to her once when she volunteered during a fundraiser.
Laura placed the clothing box in storage.
Then she opened the second box.
The red toolbox was inside.
She looked directly at the camera.
Then moved out of frame.
Where did she take it?
The hallway camera showed her entering the maintenance room.
We searched the room.
Shelves.
Cabinets.
Supply lockers.
Nothing.
Then our maintenance supervisor remembered an old utility hatch behind the water heater.
Inside was the toolbox.
Locked.
Detective Harris collected it before anyone opened it.
At the station, Margaret identified the combination.
Robert used their wedding anniversary.
Inside were receipts.
USB drives.
A second voice recorder.
And a handwritten ledger.
Withdrawals from Margaret and Robert’s accounts.
Small at first.
Five hundred.
Eight hundred.
Then thousands.
Beside several entries, Robert wrote:
Laura said emergency.
No repayment.
Do not confront Margaret yet.
Another page tracked medication.
Dizzy after tea.
Sleepy after soup.
Heart racing after coffee.
Margaret stopped reading.
“Oh, God.”
Harris said, “Mrs. Bennett, these are Robert’s observations. Not proof of cause.”
“I know.”
Laura’s voice.
“You don’t get to decide what Mom does with the house.”
Robert:
“It is her house too.”
Laura:
“She’s going to live with me.”
Robert:
“She has not agreed to that.”
Laura:
“She will.”
Then Robert said:
“You forged her signature.”
Silence.
Laura answered:
“Be very careful what you accuse me of.”
The recording ended.
Harris looked at Margaret.
“Do you still have the original house-sale contract?”
“Yes.”
Buyer:
Bennett Property Solutions LLC.
Margaret stared.
“I thought it was a private investor.”
Harris checked the registration.
