Chapter 16 - THE SAFE-DEPOSIT BOX

The brass key opened a safe-deposit box at a bank forty miles away.
The box had been rented under Lily’s trust.
Daniel had never known it existed.
Detective Alvarez stood beside him when the bank officer slid the metal tray onto the table.
Inside was a red enamel bird no larger than Daniel’s thumb.
A flash drive was hidden inside its hollow body.
There were also account ledgers.
Copies of contracts.
Photographs.
And one handwritten letter from Sarah.
Daniel plugged the drive into an offline laptop.
Folders appeared by year.
North Bridge Advisory.
Grant Holloway.
Claire Bennett.
Peter Reed.
Daniel looked at Alvarez.
“Claire was telling the truth about one thing.”
Alvarez nodded.
“This is bigger than the trust withdrawals.”
The records showed millions diverted from Sarah’s foundation over six years.
Grant had created the network.
Claire had processed false invoices.
Reed had disguised transfers as legal expenses.
Then Daniel found an audio file dated two days before Sarah’s crash.
Sarah’s voice came first.
“I copied everything.”
Grant answered.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
“You’ll destroy this family.”
“No, Grant.”
“You did that.”
A chair scraped across the recording.
Then Claire’s voice appeared.
“Sarah, please stop.”
Daniel froze.
Claire had been in the room.
Sarah said one final thing.
“If anything happens to me, Daniel gets the red bird.”
Grant laughed.
“Then Daniel becomes a problem too.”
The recording ended.
Alvarez immediately called the district attorney.
Daniel kept searching.
At the bottom of the drive was a folder labeled LILY.
Inside was a scanned legal document.
Daniel opened it.
His stomach dropped.
It was an amended trust instrument.
Someone had attempted to name Claire as Lily’s successor guardian if Daniel died or became legally unfit.
The signature at the bottom looked like Daniel’s.
May you like
It was forged.
And the witness signature belonged to Peter Reed.
