Chapter 18 - THE PERSON WHO ALMOST GOT AWAY

Peter Reed disappeared before police could arrest him.
His house was empty.
His accounts were draining fast.
Alvarez issued a warrant and an airport alert.
Daniel stayed home with Lily.
He was done leaving her behind while adults chased secrets.
Mark came over with pizza.
For the first time in days, Lily laughed.
The sound almost broke Daniel.
Then someone knocked on the door.
A delivery driver handed Daniel a plain envelope.
Inside was a flash drive and a note.
I SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS TO SARAH THREE YEARS AGO.
P.R.
Reed.
Daniel called Alvarez before opening the drive.
The file contained security footage from the parking garage beneath Sarah’s office building.
The timestamp was the night before her crash.
Grant stood beside Sarah’s car.
Another man knelt near the front wheel.
Claire waited twenty feet away.
She was crying.
Grant pointed at her.
Even without audio, his meaning was obvious.
Stay quiet.
The second video showed Reed arriving ten minutes later.
He handed Grant an envelope.
The circle was complete.
Daniel felt sick.
His phone rang.
Alvarez.
“We found Reed.”
“Where?”
“Bus terminal.”
“He’s in custody.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time, everyone connected to Sarah’s death was alive and reachable.
Then Lily walked into the room holding a crayon drawing.
“Daddy, I remembered something.”
Daniel immediately knelt.
“What?”
Lily pointed at a stick figure she had drawn beside a car.
“Mommy took me to her office once.”
Daniel’s heart slowed.
“She was talking to Claire.”
“What did you hear?”
Lily frowned, trying hard to remember.
“Claire said, ‘I won’t let him hurt the little girl.’”
Daniel looked at Alvarez on the phone.
Claire had participated.
Claire had lied.
Claire had abused Lily.
But three years earlier, she had also tried to stop Grant from targeting her.

That did not make Claire innocent.
It meant the final truth was even uglier than Daniel thought.
