Chapter 18 - The Door He Could Not Lock

Nora didn't let me walk into the quarry alone. We waited behind her officers while negotiators called to Daniel through the pump-house door. He had barricaded it with a steel cabinet and was threatening to destroy the records he carried.

"He doesn't have the originals," Lucía told Nora. "We do. He wants Rafael close enough to hurt him."

Her voice was steady. I realized she had stopped treating our father like a ghost. He was a frightened, dangerous man in a locked room, not the whole world.

Daniel shouted again. "Your mother wanted to ruin us! She tried to take everything!"

I answered from behind the police line. "She wanted to leave. She had every right."

"She stole my children!"

"We weren't property, Dad. Neither was the orchard."

The pump motor started. Water roared somewhere under the floor, followed by an electrical pop. Smoke began leaking from beneath the door.

Nora ordered us back as firefighters and officers forced an emergency entrance through a side maintenance hatch. They found Daniel crouched beside a burning bundle of papers. He resisted, struck one officer, and slipped on the wet concrete. His ankle twisted under him.

For one awful moment I heard Mom's voice on the cassette, calling through a locked door. I wanted to leave him there. I hated that part of myself. But the rescuers didn't hesitate. They pulled him outside, handcuffed him, and treated his injury.

As he passed me, Daniel finally looked into my face. The years had deepened his wrinkles, but his eyes were the same ones I remembered from childhood.

"I was going to come back for you," he said.

"You did come back," I answered. "With a coffin."

He looked away. Nora told us the arrest would be only the beginning: investigators still had to prove each crime, secure witnesses, and follow the money.

When the ambulance carrying Daniel pulled out, Lucía took my hand. Celia stood nearby beside an investigator, waiting to be questioned about what she'd done.

She held out the sealed letter Mom had left us. "There's something on the back," she said.

In Mom's handwriting were the words: OPEN THIS WHEN YOU CAN BOTH CHOOSE FREELY.
