Chapter 19 - Protect the Truth

Michael Mercer’s record was formally amended.
Not cleaned.
Corrected.
The new report stated that he helped design the emergency framework later abused by Harbor Meridian.
It also stated that he revoked his authorization, documented the abuse, and died while trying to expose it.
Hannah approved every word.
Clara read the final version beside her.
“Do you think he’d be angry?”
“That we included his mistake?”
“Yes.”
Hannah smiled faintly.
“Probably.”
Clara laughed through tears.
“That sounds like him.”
Anna Lee received a posthumous commendation.
Her daughter accepted it.
Marisol began working with a survivor advocacy group.
Sophie returned to Seattle.
Nathan started learning how to be her father again without demanding the title.
Thorne testified from protected custody.
His testimony was ugly.
Useful.
Complete.
Hannah learned to value complete over pretty.
Months after the first hearing, a shipyard memorial was dedicated near the harbor.
One line from Michael’s final ledger page was carved into stone:
PROTECT THE TRUTH, NOT MY REPUTATION.
Hannah stood with Clara.
Her mother touched the words.
“He would have hated the ceremony.”
“He hated neckties more.”
They both laughed.
Then a young inspector approached.
“Commander, the Resolute is ready for final certification.”
Hannah looked toward the ship.
“Why me?”
“Because the new rule requires two independent inspections before any sealed interior space can be approved.”
He handed her a clipboard.
“No hidden compartments without two signatures.”
Hannah studied the line.
Signatures had once hidden everything.
Now they would expose responsibility.
She signed.
Then handed the pen to a civilian inspector beside her.
“Your turn.”
He signed too.
For the first time in years, Hannah felt something close to peace.
Then the inspector said:
“There’s one more thing you should see.”
May you like
He led her below deck.
Toward the place that used to be Deck Four.
