Chapter 20 - No More Hidden Decks

Sunlight from an open maintenance hatch spilled across bare steel.
No blankets.
No restraints.
No hidden controls.
Nothing concealed.
Hannah stood in the center of the space where five people had once waited in darkness.
Marisol joined her.
“I thought I would hate being here,” she said.
“Do you?”
Marisol looked around.
“No. It’s smaller than I remember.”
“Fear changes measurements.”
Marisol smiled.
They walked back toward the ramp.
At the top, Hannah paused.
This was where Victor Kane had thrown her into the Pacific.
For months, people had asked if she still dreamed about falling.
She did.
But the dream had changed.
Now she always surfaced.
Clara waited on the pier.
Nathan and Sophie stood farther away arguing about coffee.
Normal argument.
Normal life.
Hannah liked the sound of it.
A shipyard worker removed the final section of the old false bulkhead.
The steel dropped with a heavy clang.
Everyone turned.
Nothing was behind it.
No files.
No secret room.
No final villain.
Just open space.
Hannah laughed.
Clara looked at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s funny?”
“Today it is.”
She walked down the ramp.
The Pacific wind was cold.
The harbor was the same. The story was not.
Her father had not been a perfect hero.
Her mother had not been innocent.
Kane had not been only a villain.
Nathan had not been only a protector.
And Hannah no longer needed any of them to fit one clean role.
Truth was harder than that.
It demanded names, dates, choices, consequences.
It demanded people admit what they did before asking why.
At the memorial, Hannah stopped beside Michael’s words one last time.
PROTECT THE TRUTH, NOT MY REPUTATION.
She touched the stone.
“I finally understand,” she whispered.
Then she turned toward the ship.
Workers were welding new inspection plates into place.
Each one carried a visible serial number.
Each one would be logged.
Each one could be questioned.
No more ghost corridors.
No more Deck Four.
May you like
No more walls everyone agreed not to see.
And nowhere left for the truth to hide.
