Chapter 12 - The Edited Video

The video made me look dangerous.
That was the point.
It began with me shouting, “Get away from me, both of you!” Then it jumped to Dr. Pierce telling me to calm down. Then to me grabbing my phone while Evelyn stood several feet away looking frightened.
A clean lie built from real moments.
“Where did it come from?” Raymond asked.
The lawyer checked the metadata.
“Uploaded from an anonymous account to the judge’s emergency filing portal.”
Grant leaned closer.
“Can we prove it was edited?”
“Yes, but not instantly.”
I looked at the order.
“What does it allow?”
The lawyer hesitated.
“Temporary psychiatric evaluation. It does not allow forced medication without a separate emergency basis, and it does not decide custody.”
“But Evelyn will use it.”
“Yes.”
Raymond called the judge’s chambers through counsel and requested an immediate hearing.
The judge refused to discuss the case until morning.
I laughed once.
“Convenient.”
Priya stepped closer to my bed.
“Emily, listen to me. This order does not give anyone permission to interfere with your obstetric care. You are medically stable, oriented, and making decisions.”
“Unless they manufacture another emergency.”
Nobody answered.
Then Mia, the young nurse, appeared again.
“I think I can prove the video is fake.”
Every head turned.
She held up a small black device.
“My body alarm.”
Hospital staff wore panic badges that recorded a few seconds of audio before and after activation. Mia had triggered hers when Evelyn raised her voice.
“The system archived the audio automatically.”
Raymond stared at her.
“Do you still have access?”
“No. But security does.”
They retrieved the file.
The audio captured everything the edited video removed.
Evelyn saying, “You have nowhere left to run in this hospital.”
Pierce ordering me to put down the phone.
Me asking what drug they were trying to give me.
And then something none of us remembered hearing clearly in the chaos.
Evelyn’s voice, lower, speaking to Pierce near the door.
“Once she’s sedated, move her before Raymond gets involved.”
Grant went completely still.
The lawyer copied the file for the judge.
Raymond turned to security.
“Find the destination of every patient transfer request entered for Emily today.”
Five minutes later, the answer came back.
There had been one.
At 1:29 p.m., Dr. Pierce requested my transfer to a private psychiatric facility called Briar Glen.
Priya frowned.
“I’ve never heard of it.”
Raymond had.

His face changed.
“Briar Glen closed six years ago.”
