Chapter 17 - The First Cry

The operating room was too bright.
That is what I remember most.
Bright lights. Blue drapes. Priya’s calm voice. Someone counting instruments. My own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
The anesthesiologist told me I would feel pressure but not pain.
I kept asking one question.
“Is she okay?”
“Her heart rate is stable right now.”
Right now became the only unit of time I trusted.
Priya worked quickly.
Then the pressure changed.
For one terrible second, the room was silent.
I stopped breathing.
A tiny cry cut through the air.
Thin. Angry. Alive.
I sobbed so hard the anesthesiologist had to remind me to breathe.
“She’s here,” Priya said. “Your daughter is here.”
They lifted her just high enough for me to see a small red face, dark hair, and furious little fists.
“Hi,” I whispered. “Hi, baby.”
The neonatal team took her to the warmer.
Thirty-one weeks meant NICU.
I knew that.
Knowing did not make it easy when they wheeled her away.
Grant met her in the neonatal unit with Raymond and my attorney present.
No forms were signed without two people reviewing them.
No visitor list included Evelyn.
No one treated my fear like hysteria.
When I woke in recovery, Raymond was there.
“How is she?”
“Two pounds, fourteen ounces. Breathing with support. Strong heartbeat.”
I cried again.
“What did Grant name her?”
Raymond smiled faintly.
“He didn’t.”
“What?”
“He said that decision belonged to both of you.”
For the first time that day, Grant’s restraint felt like love instead of weakness.
He entered a few minutes later.
His eyes were swollen.
“She’s beautiful.”
I nodded.
“We need a name.”
He sat beside me.
“You choose.”
“No. We choose.”
After a long silence, I said, “Hannah.”
Grant’s mouth opened.
“As a middle name,” I added. “Not to erase what happened. To remember the person your family tried to erase.”
He cried quietly.
“Clara Hannah Hart?”
I smiled for the first time all day.
“Clara Hannah.”
Then Raymond’s attorney appeared at the door.
His expression pulled us back to reality.
“Emily, Evelyn has been arrested.”
Grant lowered his head.
“And Pierce?”
“Also in custody.”
I exhaled.
The attorney did not leave.
“There’s one more thing.”

I looked at him.
“Caleb says Evelyn wasn’t the person at the top of the plan.”
