Chapter 12 - No More Quiet Rooms

Rosa denied signing the statement. June notified Ruiz and told everyone not to circulate the document beyond the investigation. But Margaret's attorney filed a sworn account of the incident in a civil proceeding, accusing Emily of becoming violent over a family disagreement.

"She hit me," Emily said through clenched teeth. "And now I'm the dangerous one?"

"A filing is an allegation," June reminded her. "Not a finding. We will respond with the evidence."

Daniel turned to Emily. "I don't know how fast this ends. I know whose side I'm on."

Emily pulled her hand away. "Don't turn this into teams, Daniel. She broke the law. People got hurt. That's what matters."

He nodded. He was learning that doing right by Emily sometimes meant listening when she was angry with him.

That afternoon she had a prenatal appointment. Dr. Shah checked the baby's growth, reviewed warning signs, and asked whether Emily had somewhere safe to stay. Emily told her about the apartment and Rosa's help.

"Good," the doctor said. "Safety isn't only about the monitor. It's about what happens after you walk out of here."

They were almost home when Emily gripped the car door. A tightening crossed her abdomen and released. Five minutes later it happened again.

"Daniel, turn around."

At the hospital, a nurse counted contractions while Dr. Shah evaluated her. Medication and careful monitoring slowed them briefly, but the baby's heart rate began dipping. Emily stared at the screen, remembering the kitchen floor.

"Please," she whispered. "Not again."

Dr. Shah came to the bedside. She explained the risks calmly. Emily was thirty-one weeks pregnant; the baby was small, and the monitoring was becoming more concerning. Continuing the pregnancy was no longer the safest choice.

Daniel pressed his forehead to Emily's. "I'm here."

Dr. Shah held her gaze. "Emily, we need to deliver your daughter tonight."
