Chapter 20

A year after Sophia called Vanessa a thief, the Moretti estate no longer felt like a compound.

The fake gardeners were gone.

The basement rooms nobody discussed were empty.

The remaining companies passed real audits.

Elena was estate manager, with hours, benefits, and a contract she had rewritten until Samuel complained.

Mateo lived with Aunt Rosa and spent school breaks with Dante.

Sophia was four and still carried the one-eared cat.

One Sunday, Dante found both children in his study.

Mateo held the bronze seal.

Sophia sat in Dante’s chair.

“What did I say about that?” Dante asked.

“Not a toy.”

Mateo put it back in the glass cabinet.

Sophia pointed.

“No secret drawer.”

“No secret promises,” Dante said.

On the wall hung a photograph of Marco laughing with the stuffed cat before it lost an ear.

Beside it was Sophia’s purple hawk drawing.

Dante had spent most of his life believing fear kept a family safe.

His father believed silence did.

Carlo believed money did.

Vanessa believed control did.

A three-year-old had broken all four ideas with one sentence.

Your fiancée is a thief.

Sophia tugged his sleeve.

“Cookie?”

“You already had one.”

She thought hard.

Then sighed.

“Two.”

Mateo laughed.

Elena covered a smile.

Dante pointed toward the kitchen.

“One more. Then dinner.”

The children ran out.

Elena stayed.

“A year ago, you would have interrogated her.”

“A year ago, I was an idiot.”

“Progress.”

Dante looked at Marco’s photograph.

At the seal.

At the open study door.

For the first time in generations, the Moretti family had fewer secrets than rooms.

He intended to keep it that way.

Then Sophia shouted from the kitchen:

“Teo stole my cookie!”

Mateo yelled back, “You gave it to me!”

Dante looked at Elena.

She smiled.

“Go investigate, boss.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“No?”

Dante walked toward the noise.

“Let the witnesses work it out.”

And for once, the man who had spent his life controlling every room was happy to enter one where nobody was afraid of him.
