Chapter 1 - The Girl at the Ballroom Door

"Don't touch me! My mom said if I ever saw that man, I was supposed to give him this."

The seven-year-old girl's voice cut through August Caldwell's charity gala so sharply that even the string quartet stopped.

Two security guards stood just inside the ballroom doors, one holding a paper bag with half a stolen dinner roll inside. Between them was a tiny girl in a faded red sweater, wet sneakers, and a pink backpack with one broken strap. Her name, someone whispered, was Elsie.

August rose from the head table.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, and used to rooms falling quiet when he stood. People called him a billionaire, a builder, a philanthropist. None of those words mattered when he saw the child clutching a dirty napkin like it contained her last breath.

"What happened?" he asked.

The head of security cleared his throat. "She was caught near the catering hall. She took bread."

"I was hungry," Elsie said.

August did not.

"Let her go."

Across the ballroom, Victoria Caldwell set down her champagne too quickly.

Elsie opened the grimy napkin.

A sapphire ring flashed beneath the chandeliers.

August stopped breathing.

He had bought it for his daughter Caroline on her eighteenth birthday.

Caroline had been declared dead eight years ago.

August took one step toward Elsie. "Where did you get that?"

The girl's fingers closed around the ring.

"My mom gave it to me."

"What was your mother's name?"

Elsie looked past him, toward Victoria.

Then back.

"Caroline."

Victoria stood frozen beside the head table, all the color gone from her face.

August heard himself ask, "Caroline what?"

Elsie's lower lip trembled.

"Caroline Caldwell."

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Then Elsie reached into her backpack and pulled out a sealed envelope.

On the front, in handwriting August had not seen in eight years, were four words:

DAD, IF SHE FINDS ELSIE...

May you like

The sentence ended there.

And Victoria whispered, "That is impossible."
