Chapter 20 - Always Come Home

The pink backpack lay open on the guest-room bed.

For one terrible second, August thought Elsie was gone.

Then June rushed in.

"She's with Thomas. In the ballroom."

August and Caroline hurried downstairs.

Elsie stood beneath the chandeliers, holding the sapphire ring.

"I wanted to see where Grandpa found me," she said.

Caroline knelt. "You scared us."

"Sorry."

Elsie opened her palm. "Mom, is this really yours?"

Caroline smiled. "Your grandpa gave it to me when I was eighteen."

"Why does it say Always Come Home?"

August answered. "Because your mom used to run away when she got mad at me."

"I did not."

"You took a bus to Milwaukee at sixteen."

Elsie giggled.

Caroline placed the ring back in her daughter's palm.

"You keep it."

"Why?"

"Because it did its job."

In the months that followed, the Children's Trust went under independent oversight. Stolen money was recovered. Victoria accepted a plea deal. Peter went to trial. Judge Harlan lost his seat and his freedom.

Caroline did not return to the estate.

August did not ask her to.

Instead, he showed up.

Breakfast. School pickup. Bad cartoons. Doctor visits. Ordinary days.

He finally understood that family was not something money could restore with one grand gesture.

Months later, Elsie pushed a plate of pancakes toward him.

"You use too much syrup."

Caroline laughed. "I told you."

August looked at his daughter, alive, and his granddaughter, safe.

"I wasted a lot of years."

Caroline reached across the table.

"You don't get them back."

"I know."

"But you get these."

Elsie lifted the sapphire ring toward the light.

"Grandpa?"

"Yeah?"

"If I ever get lost, will you come find me?"

August's throat tightened.

"Every time."

She smiled.

The words inside the ring no longer sounded like a promise he had failed to keep.

May you like

They sounded like an instruction.

Always come home.
