Chapter 18 - The Judge

Judge Malcolm Harlan had signed Caroline's death declaration eight years earlier.

He had also approved sealed motions connected to the Children's Trust.

Nora found the pattern within an hour.

Every time money moved through one of the shell companies, Harlan issued a court order that buried the paper trail under confidentiality.

"He's not just covering for them," Caroline said. "He's part of it."

August called federal investigators.

The blue notebook.

The recordings.

The false guardianship petition.

Marcus's files.

The pills.

Thomas's statement.

Peter's storage video.

By evening, agents were at Harlan's home.

But the judge was gone.

Caroline sat at the cabin table with Elsie asleep against her shoulder.

"You can come home," August said.

Caroline looked at him.

"Home where?"

"The estate."

"That place stopped being home a long time ago."

He nodded.

"Then somewhere else."

She studied him.

"You really changed."

"No. I finally stopped assuming money could fix what listening might have prevented."

Caroline smiled sadly.

"That's a start."

Mason entered from the porch.

"They found Harlan."

"Where?"

"Airport hotel."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"And talking?"

"Very."

Harlan had requested a deal.

His statement connected Victoria, Peter, Marcus, and Richard to decades of theft.

He also admitted he had accepted money to declare Caroline dead despite knowing the evidence was incomplete.

August felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Then Mason added, "He says Victoria wasn't the person who ordered the attack on Caroline's car."

Caroline's hand tightened around Elsie's blanket.

"Peter?"

"No."

"Marcus?"

Mason shook his head.

"Harlan says the order came from Richard before he died."

August stared.

"That makes no sense. Richard died years before Caroline's crash."

Mason set a file on the table.

"It does if the order wasn't about Caroline."

Caroline opened it.

The original target name was August Caldwell.

Caroline whispered, "Victoria knew how Richard tried to kill you."

August's blood ran cold.

"And she used the same plan on me."
