Chapter 1

The Sound Of The Clippers

The clippers were still buzzing when Alessandro Rizzano heard his three-year-old daughter scream.

“Hold still, you little brat!” Bianca snapped from behind the bridal-suite door.

Alessandro had been straightening his cuffs outside the chapel. He pushed through the adjoining hallway and found Livia trapped between a dressing chair and a woman in a white gown. A thick curl lay on the carpet. Another fell as the buzzing blade passed beside Livia's ear.

“Bianca.” His voice was low enough to stop the room.

Bianca turned, holding the clippers as if she'd been caught brushing her hair. “Oh, please. Don't make this dramatic.”

Livia's curls, the ones her late mother had twisted into little braids, were uneven and hacked close to her scalp. The blue ribbon she'd worn for the ceremony was tangled in the discarded hair. Rosalie Kent, the housemaid, pressed a hand against Livia's shoulder to keep her from jerking toward the blade.

“Daddy!” Livia sobbed. “Make it stop.”

Alessandro reached over Bianca's wrist and switched the clippers off. He waited until her grip loosened, then took them and set them on the vanity. Bianca stepped toward Livia again. He put himself between them.

“I was fixing her hair,” Bianca said. “You ought to thank me. I trim my poodle the same way.”

Rosalie made a sound like she'd swallowed glass.

Alessandro's fingers curled around the vanity stool. He shoved it aside with his foot when Bianca tried to circle him. It rolled hard into her knees. She fell back against a chair; a makeup case tipped and spilled pale powder across her gown. The room went silent except for Livia's ragged breaths.

“Touch my things again,” Bianca said, “and this wedding is over.”

Alessandro glanced at the diamond ring shining on her hand. “Take it off.”

She laughed once. Then she saw his face. The ring landed on the vanity with a quiet click.

“Which wedding?” he asked.

He lifted Livia and felt her trembling all the way through her small body. Beneath the dressing table lay a manila folder, half-hidden by Bianca's silk garment bag. On the cover were four words: LIVIA RIZZANO — CUSTODY TRANSFER.
