Chapter 9

Who Opened The Door
Gabriel crossed the hall in three strides. The nursery door stood open, but Livia was safe inside, sitting beside Rosalie. A cleaning cart rolled away near the service elevator.
“Stop that cart,” Gabriel told two guards.
The cleaner turned out to be a temporary employee who had been given a working security badge at a side entrance. In the cart was an envelope marked FOR MRS. MORETTI, containing copies of the custody petition and the old address of Teresa's apartment.
“Somebody paid me to pick it up,” the cleaner said, trembling. “I didn't even know the little girl was here.”
“Who paid you?” Ortiz asked.
“Mr. Varano's assistant.”
Gabriel swore. Alessandro, reached by phone, told him not to threaten the man. “Let Detective Ortiz handle it.”
At the police station, Ortiz showed Grace a recovered email: Enzo had instructed the assistant to remove all remaining documents before the wedding cancellation reached the registry.
“Enough for an arrest?” Alessandro asked when Grace called.
“Not yet. Enough to preserve records and get warrants moving.”
That answer frustrated him. He was used to ordering doors opened. Grace reminded him that evidence would protect Livia longer than fear would.
That evening a wedding photographer sent Rosalie a video taken while checking a light in the bridal suite. The footage showed Bianca entering with the clippers, ordering the stylist out, and reaching for Livia's ribbon.
It also caught one sentence Bianca spoke before the screaming began.
