Chapter 19 - NOT THE GIRL FROM THE VIDEO

Daisy sat on the school steps with her stuffed rabbit tucked under her chin. Sofia had already spoken with the teacher, who promised to address the teasing without making Daisy perform her pain for classmates.

Damon sat beside her, leaving a polite space.

“Are you mad?” she asked.

“No.”

“Everybody saw me ask for cake. They think I never had any food.”

“What do you want them to know?”

She considered this. “I can read some words now. And I run fast. And Mama makes the best noodles.”

“Those sound like good things to know.”

“And I'm not only the girl with no shoes.”

Damon's throat tightened. “You're right.”

He called his communications director and told her to take down every foundation post using Daisy's photograph. The images had driven donations upward, but nobody had asked the child or her mother whether she wanted her worst day displayed to strangers.

At the next board meeting, an independent chair replaced Victor pending the investigation. Elisa resigned. Several directors who had ignored invoices gave statements to auditors. The foundation committed to reimbursing diverted restricted donations and setting up direct community oversight of shelter spending.

Victor and Pike were later charged in connection with the financial scheme and Carmen's confinement. Proceedings continued; Damon resisted the temptation to declare victory before a court had heard the full case. Elisa faced separate legal scrutiny for the records she had approved.

Months passed. Some shelters reopened quickly; others required repairs, new staff, and apologies that couldn't be printed on banners. Damon began attending meetings where residents—not donors—decided which services mattered most.

One evening Ruth called him from Hope House.

“There's one thing we haven't fixed,” she said.

“What?”

“The gala. Everyone remembers how it ended.”

“Maybe we shouldn't have another.”

“We shouldn't have that one. But the children are planning a dinner. And Daisy has a question about the cake.”
