Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Mud

The first blast of water hit me in the face before I had finished saying my son's name.
Thirty people went silent.
Then somebody laughed.
I stood on the lawn of a Belle Meade estate wearing a faded gray shawl, a thrift-store blouse, and shoes I had bought that morning for twelve dollars. Red lipstick from someone's abandoned champagne glass had already stained the napkin in my hand. Now freezing water ran down my neck and soaked everything I wore.
Vanessa Mitchell held the garden hose like a trophy.
"Beggars don't get married here," she said.
Her friends laughed harder.
I tightened both hands around my reusable shopping bag. Inside, sealed in a waterproof pouch, my phone kept recording.
"I only need to speak with Ethan Carter," I said.
Vanessa looked me over slowly. "Mr. Carter doesn't meet random women who wander onto private property."
Her mother, Patricia, wrinkled her nose. "Search her bag before she leaves."
George Mitchell barely looked at me. "And check the silver after."
A young waiter started toward me with a towel.
Vanessa snapped, "Touch her and you're fired before dessert."
He stopped.
I reached out and squeezed his hand anyway. "It's okay, sweetheart. Today everybody is showing us who they are."
Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Now the homeless woman is giving life lessons."
I looked straight at her.
"Look at me carefully. This is the last day you'll treat someone this way and think there won't be consequences."
Her smile disappeared.
Then the patio doors opened.
Someone called, "Ethan!"
My son stepped outside holding a champagne glass.
He saw me kneeling in the mud.
The glass slipped from his hand and shattered.
"Mom?"
The word moved through the party like thunder.
Vanessa went white.
Ethan ran to me, dropped to his knees, and wrapped his jacket around my shoulders.
"Who did this?"
Nobody answered.
Vanessa finally forced a laugh. "Honey, it was a misunderstanding. I thought she was asking for money."
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
"So you sprayed an elderly woman with a hose because you thought she was poor?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.

Behind her, Patricia leaned close and whispered, "Fix this tonight. If that old woman gets involved, everything falls apart."
My phone recorded that too.
