Chapter 17 - Ethan's Signature

We found the document in Ethan's home safe.
His signature was real.
For the first time, I did not know what to say.
It was a letter of intent dated six weeks earlier.
Ethan had agreed to consider investing up to twenty-five million dollars of his personal money into a Mitchell hospitality fund after marriage.
Not Carter Meridian money.
His own.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
He looked embarrassed.
"Because I wanted one decision in my life not reviewed by a committee."
That hurt more than I expected.
Maybe because I understood it.
I had spent decades protecting him from people who wanted access to our name.
Protection can become control if you never loosen your grip.
"Did Vanessa pressure you?"
"No."
"George?"
"He pitched it. I said I'd consider it."
Nina reviewed the document.
It was nonbinding.
But Patricia had photographed the signature page and used it in presentations to other lenders as evidence of "Carter family participation."
Ethan swore.
His private mistake had become public leverage.
I looked at him.
"You were careless."
"I know."
"But you weren't dishonest."
He nodded.
That distinction mattered.
We gave investigators the document.
Ethan volunteered to testify.
That night he asked if I thought he was stupid for loving Vanessa.
"No."
"Even after everything?"
"Love isn't proof of intelligence. It's proof you're human."
He laughed weakly.
Then his face changed.
"Do you think she loved me?"
I thought about Vanessa refusing her father on Martin's recording.
"I think part of her did."
"Is that enough?"
"No."
Sometimes truth is simple and still painful.
The next morning, George Mitchell was arrested.
May you like
Patricia was not.
She had disappeared before agents reached the house.
